Morality

CURRENT POSITION · MORAL ANTI-REALISM · CURRENT COMMITMENT · STRONG

I don’t think morality is written into the universe. Direct moral status comes from lucidity, with equal fundamental worth once the threshold is crossed.

WHAT I VALUE

I don’t believe good and evil exist as objective properties of reality. Values arise in conscious agents and the social systems they build.

I strongly value truth, cooperation, building, autonomy, reciprocity, human flourishing, integration, and long-term improvement. Those are commitments I endorse, not conclusions that determinism proves.

PERSONAL MORALITY / SHARED RULES

Someone else can have a substantially different morality. I don’t expect my complete personal morality to be binding on them or automatically become law.

The question is not how to make everyone adopt my values, but how incompatible people can have enough overlapping interest to maintain a shared structure that protects their differences. That is why pluralism matters to me.

I want a united front without uniformity: people can disagree about religion, identity, purpose, or lifestyle while benefiting from the same basic conditions for coexistence.

Agreement and power do not make a rule objectively right. A society could agree that slavery is acceptable, and I would still want enough power to stop it. Reciprocity also means I should not impose a rule I would reject if I were receiving it.

DIRECT MORAL STATUS

I do not think direct moral status comes from species membership, intelligence by itself, or the ability to experience pain. My current view is that it comes from lucidity: the kind of self-aware subjecthood described in Consciousness.

Lucidity itself can vary enormously in strength. One person may experience reality with more clarity, conceptual depth, memory, or self-awareness than another. I do not think fundamental moral worth should scale with those differences once the relevant threshold has been crossed.

More lucidity does not mean greater fundamental moral worth.

Once a being possesses lucidity, or an existing underlying architecture capable of sustaining that kind of lucid subjecthood, I treat it as having the same fundamental direct moral status as other lucid beings.

My own clarity and sense of presence have changed significantly throughout my life. That does not make my current self intrinsically more morally important than my childhood self. Reduced functioning can instead create reasons for greater protection, support, coaching, or accommodation.

The same principle applies beyond humanity. A sufficiently lucid artificial intelligence, nonhuman animal, alien, or other system would enter the same basic moral category. A vastly more cognitively capable or more lucid being would not automatically deserve greater fundamental moral weight than a human.

What I mean by lucidity →

EQUAL STATUS, DIFFERENT TREATMENT

Different lucid beings can have different needs, vulnerabilities, abilities, responsibilities, and circumstances. Those differences can justify different practical treatment without implying different fundamental moral worth.

TEMPORARY LOSS OR SUPPRESSION

Temporary reductions in lucidity do not remove direct moral status when the underlying architecture remains capable of recovering. Sleep, anesthesia, severe brain fog, temporary neurological impairment, and similar reversible states do not destroy the underlying lucid subject.

A human does not lose consideration merely because their ability to communicate, reason, or reciprocate is severely impaired if the architecture for lucid subjecthood remains. The capacity for moral reasoning affects responsibility, not fundamental moral worth.

PERMANENT IRREVERSIBLE LOSS

If a being that once possessed lucidity permanently and irreversibly loses the underlying architecture required for lucid subjecthood, with no reasonable possibility of recovery, I do not think the remaining biological organism necessarily retains direct moral status merely because simpler conscious experiences or pain continue.

That still does not mean the organism can be treated however people want. Strong practical protections and humane care can remain justified by causal consequences: risk of misclassification, uncertainty about prognosis, normalization of cruelty, institutional abuse, effects on families and communities, fear and insecurity among lucid beings, and broader deterioration of humane social norms.

Prior wishes, relationships, and the treatment of remains can still matter. Uncertainty about irreversible loss should favor continued protection.

BELOW THE THRESHOLD / CAUSAL PROTECTIONS

Nonhuman animals below the lucidity threshold do not receive direct moral status from pain or distress itself under my current framework.

However, animal treatment should still be regulated and humane for causal reasons. Gratuitous torture, cruelty, or deliberately increasing distress for its own sake can cultivate destructive human behavior, normalize cruelty, affect lucid beings, and create wider undesirable causal effects.

The justification for those protections is therefore different from direct moral status. I distinguish the intrinsic moral status of a lucid subject from practical rules governing how lucid agents should interact with beings below that threshold.

DEVELOPMENTAL BOUNDARY

Development creates a different problem because the full capacities involved in lucidity emerge gradually. My current practical approach is to use the earliest plausible development of neural architecture capable of consciousness as a conservative proxy for when moral protections begin, rather than waiting for full lucidity to become functional.

Current neuroscience does not identify an exact point when consciousness begins and does not identify a gestational point when full lucidity begins. My present provisional boundary is around 24 weeks of gestation, because this is approximately where substantial thalamocortical connectivity associated with the possibility of conscious processing begins to become established.

This is not a claim that a 24-week fetus is lucid. It is not even a claim that consciousness definitely exists at exactly 24 weeks. It is a provisional developmental protection threshold using the earliest plausible conscious architecture as a proxy. The boundary should move if better neuroscience changes the developmental picture.

Connectivity alone does not establish subjective experience.

BETTER CAUSAL ENVIRONMENTS

Given my causal view of people, I do not think morality should be centered on ranking individuals by metaphysical deservingness. I care more about creating environments, incentives, protections, support systems, and institutions that produce better causal paths for lucid beings.

TRUTHFULNESS

Truthfulness is a strong default because people make better decisions with accurate information. Lying corrupts that information and can push later decisions away from reality.

It is not an absolute command. Lying to protect someone from unjust persecution can be justified when telling the truth would help produce a substantially worse outcome. The exception depends on the coercive or unjust context and its consequences, not convenience.

HIGHER-ORDER PROJECTS

  1. Additional latitude needs expected benefit substantially beyond the individual, with evidence supporting that expectation.
  2. Harms must be proportionate, and less harmful alternatives must have been seriously considered.
  3. The reasoning must remain reciprocal: I cannot claim an exception I would reject for someone else.
  4. Meaningful cost or risk should be shared or self-assumed, not simply pushed onto others.
  5. The project must remain open to revision or abandonment if the evidence turns against it.

Self-sacrifice shows commitment, not correctness. Suffering does not prove an idea is good, and sacrifice is not valuable for its own sake. The point is not to ask everyone else to bear risks I refuse to share.
